Should You Judge a Tequila Brand by Their Blanco?

Why is Blanco the best way to evaluate a tequila brand? Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. As soon as you add tequila to a barrel, any barrel whatsoever, it starts to change the flavor of the tequila. And the longer it's in the barrel, the easier is to disguise any flaws and modify the flavors of the tequila.Yeah, and there's a lot of crappy tequila that's made better by adding things into it, aging it, et cetera. It's like plastic surgery, but for tequila. Yeah.We dig brands that only have Blanco expressions that have the courage to say, Hey, we make good tequila. We're only going to make a Blanco. So brands like Lalo, Entre Manos, PM Spirits, this is all they make and I think that's actually pretty cool. Yeah, and obviously we also really love Reposados, Añejos. We review them a lot, we drink them a lot. But if you really want to know how great a tequila brand is, try their Blanco. In Mexico, if you're down there and meet with tequila distillers, that's exactly what they say.If you want to know how good a brand is, drink the Blanco. Do you agree? Let us know in the comments.

What Tequila to Buy in Phoenix, AZ

You all love it when we do shopping videos. So let's do Trevor's in Phoenix, Arizona. Trevor's has locations in Phoenix and in Scottsdale. It's one of the cleanest liquor stores I've ever seen. And this place has video games. They have a full bar. They have an in-house restaurant. They even have merch. I got myself a sweatshirt. And Trevor's has an incredible tequila selection. It's mostly additive-free. It just keeps going and going and going. I'm going to grab four bottles here at Trevor's. First, is the Volans Still Strength. Oh, baby. Is this one good! Second, the Volcan De Mi Tierra Blanco. It is so crisp and clean. Third, the Lagrimas Plata. It is delicious, packed with agave flavor. And one of my all-time favorites, the El Tesoro Paradiso 5-Year XA. If you want my list of tequilas to get at Trevor's, just go to TequilaJayBaer.com/Pages/Phoenix.

How 818 Saved Their Tequila Brand

Here's how 818 Tequila saved their brand. There's more than 2,000 tequila brands out there and more all the time. And the most important thing a brand can do is understand who is their customer and why. 818 is of course associated with supermodel Kendall Jenner, and it's truly a tequila I do not like from a flavor standpoint. They initially rolled out with a blanco, a reposado, and añejo priced at $45, $55 and $65 a bottle. And it went pretty good. But then late last year, they committed to a Gen Z customer, a younger consumer, and they reduced pricing accordingly to $29, $39, and $49, and they sent Kendall on like a huge tour of college campuses. What were the results? Their blanco sales in February increased 100% versus February the year before. 818 is also aggressively rolling out half sizes of its blanco and reposado bottles. Now, would I prefer that 818 tastes a lot less like pancake syrup? I would, but I give them credit for understanding their market and actually being willing to change it up on the fly.

4 Facts You Might Not Know About Tequila

Here are 4 things you might not know about tequila. 1st, all the tequila in the world is made in a region about the size of Tennessee, mostly near Jalisco, but parts of four other Mexican states are allowed by law to make tequila. 2nd, it's called tequila because in the mid 1700s, the town of Tequila was one of the first places to make it. So if things were just a bit different back in the day, we might call this beverage Amatitan or some other place name instead of tequila. 3rd, all tequila is gluten-free, so it's redundant and unnecessary to say so on the label. 4th, the number changes, but there's approximately 190-200 distilleries that make tequila. Some of them make a lot of different brands and some of them like Siete Leguas make just one brand. What is your favorite tequila fact? Let me know in the comments.

El Bandido Yankee Anejo Tequila Review

Would you commit a crime to drink this new Añejo?   View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jay Baer (@tequilajaybaer)   This is El Bandido Yankee Añejo. It is from NOM 1107, new additive-free, and it is aged one year in American Oak. Super good price as well for Añejo. Made by a female. I used to the distiller, Karina Rojo. That is Karina. I like when the packaging allows us, gives us notes for the video, that's fantastic. I like the nose. Yeah, it's nice. It's like a little sweet, not overwhelming. Yeah, very pleasant. Not oaky. Really tasty. Wow. It's light for an Añejo. Very light for an Añejo. Mm-Hmm. That's easy to drink. They oxygenate their tequila a lot to round it off, and it really does work in this one. I will say, if you're somebody who loves like bourbon style Añejos, this is not your guy. Okay with that. To me, this is like a Reposado plus. Uhhuh. This kind of how I would characterize this. And I don't love Añejos typically, so I actually really, really like this expression. I think it's a really nice job, subtle sweetness, harmonious, not super duper complex, but especially for the price, I think it's really nice. And some people will love, love, love this. Like a lot of wood in their face. I dig it. What's your score for this one? I'm going to give it an eight. I liked it. It's very fairly priced. Uh, I'm a fan. Yeah, I'm going to say the same actually. I think it's a really fair price.Maybe eight and a half. El Bandido Yankee Añejo, look for it.

New Don Julio Alma Miel Joven Tequila

Should you try this new tequila from Don Julio? -It is Alma Miel Joven. It is a Blanco plus agave honey, plus a little bit of a 14-month aged añejo. They recommend you serve it with ice and a dehydrated orange wheel. So we have done that. Let's see how it is. - That was yummy.- Yeah! Pretty light nose. Not a lot to it.- Yeah. It doesn't have a ton of flavor to me.- No, not as much as I expected with the añejo. What I do notice though, and maybe this is the Agave honey, is it's just a little more syrupy than what you would get in a regular blanco. It doesn't have a bad like tequila-y aftertaste either, which I appreciate. It's not really my thing, but I can see people really liking this. It is very easy to drink and I would drink it, maybe like this with ice. For people who aren't really into like the strong agave flavors, I can see it.-Totally! I completely agree. Yeah.-Yeah! I'd probably go like a 7, maybe.-Yeah! I'd probably be around the same. It's good, nothing special, but not offensive.

Tequila of the Month - Authentico Tequila

Our tequila of the month this month for March is Authentico, co-owned by the distillery in Mexico, and a great family out of Chicago. I think this tequila like checks all the boxes. I mean, pretty much we've got additive-free, USDA organic, sustainable. Reasonably priced. Yeah, reasonably priced. Especially for organic tequila because organic agaves are pricey. Yes, they are. This Blanco is great for mixing. Drink it straight as well, but it's really great for mixers.Say the Reposado is probably one of my favorite Reposados. And it's very reasonably priced, which I, of course, appreciate. And then the Cristalino is also delicious and reasonably priced. If you really like more of a bourbon style reposado, this is probably not your guy. But if you like less aggressive reposados, this is a great choice. I love this brand. Reasonably priced, organic, additive-free, doing things the right way.Special deal right now. Free shipping if you buy direct, check out the bio for the link.
