The Truth About Tequila Additives

The Truth About Tequila Additives

Do you know what's in your tequila? Probably not. Probably not, because, probably not, because the regulations permit tequila makers to add up to 1% of additives in their tequila.   View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jay Baer (@tequilajaybaer)   Now those are called Abocantes in Mexico, and they can include sweeteners, they can include oak extract, they can include caramel coloring to make it look darker, and glycerin.Additives aren't harmful, but they're often used to make lower quality tequilas, seem higher quality, be sweeter, or look older. None of this has to actually be disclosed on the tequila bottle label. The good news, however, is that there's a big movement, especially here in the US, towards additive-free tequilas. And choosing additive-free tequilas, which include... agave, water, and yeast. The Tequila Matchmaker app has a list on the app of dozens and dozens and dozens of additive-free tequilas. And our friends at seelbachs.com have a great selection of additive-free tequilas that you can get shipped right to your door. Yeah, check out the link in our bio. Promo code "Jay" to save 10%.Choose additive-free. We do.

Flecha Azul Blanco Tequila Review

Flecha Azul Blanco Tequila Review

This tequila is owned by Mark Wahlberg. Flecha Azul Blanco. Made in a stone oven. Let's see what we think here, Maddie. All right. $50, I think $55 for the Blanco.    View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jay Baer (@tequilajaybaer)   Yeah. So a little, you know, it's up there a little bit. Yeah. It's got some nice cooked agave sweetness on the nose. Yeah, it doesn't have a bad smell. I would say average. Like it's nothing memorable for me but.. I get a little bit of a maybe a stone fruit, like a little bit of a peach on the nose as well. It's nice. I don't mind the nose at all. Yeah. Pretty soft. Yeah. Not very hot. No, not too harsh. The taste is pretty good. What gets me though is the finish. Yeah. Yeah, I don't love the, it's got like a kind of a burnt rubber kind of a finish that I don't love. It's not bad at the beginning. The longer it's with me, It becomes like an unwanted house guest a little bit. In a mix, right? Like totally fine in a cocktail. You want to go make kind of a strong mix to kind of overwhelm that burnt taste at the end. The spectacular margarita mix from our friends at Q. Good choice. Easiest margarita you can possibly make in the world. Open the can, put it in. I'm going to give it a 6. Would be good in a margarita. I don't mind the flavor, but the finish isn't my favorite, so six. Adequate. Definitely works in a pinch cocktail. 6 as well. Six and a six, Flecha Azul.

Number Juan, Juan in a Million Tequila Review

Number Juan, Juan in a Million Tequila Review

This is a $500 tequila owned by comedians. Is this funny or fantastic? What is it? Number Juan, Juan in a million. Really cool box presentation. Talked about the brand history.   View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jay Baer (@tequilajaybaer)   Owned by two famous comedians Ron White and Alex Reymundo. This Number Juan, Juan in a Million Extra Añejo is age nine and a half years.Wow. Only 3000 bottles of this made. So it's super limited edition. That is a nice smell. It really is. And it's not overly sweet and cloying and you think with that much barrel contact, it would get kind of over the top vanilla-ey butterscotch-ey. Yeah. But it's super in balance still. That's surprisingly dry.Yeah, that is really good. It's not overly sweet at all, but it still does have a little bit of that sweetness just from being aged. Yeah, they did a nice job preserving agave character after like a decade. This has got to be one of my favorite Extra Añejos out there, I have to say. I completely agree. If it wasn't $500, I would probably splurge and buy it. Like if it was. Look at you go. More of my price range. You could splurge one of these shirts that we're selling at tequilajaybaer.com. There you go. I really like this. It is super well balanced. It's a nine for me. It's really nicely done. Yeah. I dig it. All right. I'm giving it an eight. I really liked it too. Good work.

Make a Ranchwater Using Drafttop

Make a Ranchwater Using Drafttop

This might be the easiest way to make a ranchwater. This is a Drafttop, not a sponsored post. We just think it's pretty cool. So you put this on here, right? And then you rotate it. Rotate the seal like this, right? And then you twist the can. I heard it open. I heard something happen. Look at that. Oh wow.   View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jay Baer (@tequilajaybaer)   How about that? Right? Amazing. So then you pour a little bit of this out and put it in one of this agave mugs. We're selling these on our store. Amazing. Don't want to waste it. Then tequila time. All right, we're going to do some Carabuena Blanco. A little bit of that. Carabuena in there. Maybe a little more. Yep. All right. The lime juice. And then half an ounce of lime juice. Throw a pinch of salt in there, Maddie all right. Tiny bit of salt. Little squeeze lime, maybe. All right. Some lime. Throw that in there, Jay. Give it a shot. Look at this. All right. Delicious. Not sharp either, which is really cool. No glass required. Great for outdoors, great for the boat, great for by the pool. Drafttop. Pretty cool.

Why is Some Tequila So Hard to Find?

Why is Some Tequila So Hard to Find?

Why can't you find some of the tequila I talk about on this channel, like this bottle of Cierto? There's a lot of links in the tequila chain. You've got the agave grower, then the distillery, then the brand owner, unless the distillery owns the brand, then the importer that gets the tequila from Mexico to the US, and the distributor that buys from the importer and then sells to restaurants and stores, and then you got restaurants and stores, and then you.   View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jay Baer (@tequilajaybaer)   That's a lot. Another issue is that each US State is essentially its own country in terms of what tequila is available. A tequila brand can only be sold in a state if they have a distributor licensed in that state. Now, you also have to make a lot of tequila to be available across the whole country, of course. Now the big brands, like Don Julio, are available everywhere because they've got the money and the volume to put themselves everywhere. For the smaller, newer, artisanal brands, they typically have to go state by state. While you might find a brand in California, but you won't find it next door in Arizona. And then 17 states are called "Control States", meaning that a government committee literally decides what is allowed to be sold in that state. Now that means that in most cases, new brands are kept out of the market. This is why e-commerce is often the best bet when you're buying tequila. I've got links to three great online stores in my bio.

Morenos Liquor Store Shopping Trip

Morenos Liquor Store Shopping Trip

Hey, tequila Jay Baer, and almost every time I'm in Chicago, I make a pilgrimage to Moreno's, one of the best tequila stores in America. Let's see what they got. One of the things I love about Moreno's is that they've got a full line of expressions for so many great brands.   View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jay Baer (@tequilajaybaer) For example, they've got all of the Terralta, right? You got Blanco, Reposado, Anejo, Extra Anejo for Terralta. That's amazing. You don't see that very often. So the other thing that's cool about Moreno's is they've got full line of the Siembra products the Siembra Valles and the Siembra Azul that's amazing and can be hard to find. Also, Santanera, which is a pretty tricky brand to find in some parts of the country.Other things that excite me of in here, actually everything excites me here, but, the full Line of Amatiteña including the matajen series, which is an unbelievably artisanally produced tequila. Of course, all the Cazcanes as well is pretty spectacular. And that's not all. There's a whole nother aisle here, including Viva Mexico, which is a brand that is massively underrated and is going to be released more in the states coming soon.If you find this a good choice, one of my favorite brands anywhere in the world. Wild Common they have that here at Moreno's. Talk about a bargain. Look at this. My friends at El Gran Legado De Vida 52 for this spectacular Blanco, that's a buy. You don't see this all the time. Nueveuno, a great brand, relatively new. They've got all of those and the full line almost of all the El Tequileño. Here at Moreno's you can't go wrong every time in Chicago. I come here, you should do. Not a paid post. I just love these guys.

Quintaliza Reposado (Tequila Aged in Coffee Barrels!)

Quintaliza Reposado (Tequila Aged in Coffee Barrels!)

The first ever tequila aged in coffee barrels. Yum or yuck? I'm guessing yum. Quintaliza Reposado. So what they do on thisis they take the Blanco, they put it in regular American oak barrels for two months.   View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jay Baer (@tequilajaybaer)   Then they take it out of those barrels and they put it in barrels that have held cold brew coffee for three months and then they bottle it. It's a patented process now.So nobody has ever done this. Which is kind of freaky deaky. Yeah. Like 80 bucks, something like that. You can get it on their website. Okay. Link in my bio. Check it out. Let's see.I like the smell of that. Yeah. Wow. It actually doesn't smell anything like coffee. No, but it's got a nice sweet, it smells to me like dark chocolate. Yeah. Yeah.Yeah, I get that too. It's got a little bit of that bitterness. It's, Ooh, nice. Maybe a little caramel too. Yes. That's a nice smell. Wow. That's really good. It's unlike any other tequila. Never had anything like that. Yeah. Nope. It tastes like regular tequila for an instant, right? And then it very quickly goes off this like, oh, now it's coffee. It's really fascinating in your mouth. It's like a thrill ride. All these sensation. It's like regular reposado now, like coffee, and then it finishes dry. I really like it. It's like my two favorite things to drink are coffee and tequila. So this is like a love project. Man, think about how popular coffee based cocktails are now. Yeah, I think this would be delicious in an espresso martini. I'm a huge fan. What are you going to give it? I am going to give it a nine. Whoa. I know. How many nines have you ever given out? Like a handful. I dig it to, I'm going eight. Nine and eight. Big score for the liza Reposado aged in cold brew coffee barrels. Check my bio for a link to get it.
