Does Agave Age Matter?

When it comes to tequila, there's a common misconception that the age of the agave plant is a defining marker of quality. Many brands proudly advertise the age at which they harvest their agave, suggesting older is always better. But, is focusing on agave's calendar age really meaningful?     In reality, agave age doesn’t tell the whole story. It's more about the plant's physiological maturity, driven by environmental factors like water, soil, and sunlight. Just like people mature at different rates, so too does agave. The Myth of "Older is Better" Tequila brands often boast about harvesting agave at an older age, aiming to emphasize maximized sugar content for a more flavorful tequila. While sugar content is essential, linking it directly to calendar age oversimplifies the matter. Physiological Maturity Over Calendar Age Agave plants in different fields mature at varying rates due to their growing conditions. This is why agave from one field may be "fully ripe" at 6 years, while another might only reach comparable maturity at 4 years. Environmental factors play a significant role, making physiological age more vital than the number on the calendar. A More Meaningful Perspective This focus on agave’s physiological maturity provides a clearer understanding of its quality and readiness for harvest. Each plant develops its potential based on genetics and environment, similar to how some people mature quicker than others. Thus, claims of harvesting "7-year-old agave" can be misleading. What Tequila Lovers Should Know When you encounter tequila brands championing the age of their agave, take a moment to consider the broader context. It's more informative to understand the conditions under which the agave was grown and harvested rather than just its age. Conclusion: Beyond Age in Tequila Tequila lovers, when evaluating a brand, consider the craftsmanship and attention to quality rather than just the numbers. The age of the agave is a fragment of the story; what truly counts is the knowledge, care, and conditions that bring out the best in every bottle.

Honesty in Tequila: Two Brands Embracing Transparency About Additives

In a world where transparency is valued more than ever, it's important to know what's in your drink—especially when it comes to tequila. While additives in tequila aren't necessarily a health issue, the real concern lies in honesty and clarity. Today, we're spotlighting two tequila brands that are leading the charge in transparency about what goes into their bottles.     The Power of Transparency Transparency in labeling keeps consumers informed and builds trust between brands and their audience. When it comes to tequila, this means disclosing the presence of any additives, which can impact the flavor profile and authenticity of the spirit. Honesty allows consumers to make informed choices based on personal preferences and flavors they enjoy. Asombroso Tequila's New Blanco: Eros First on our list is @asombrosotequila, from NOM 1459, which has recently introduced a blanco called Eros. While the brand wasn't always known for being additive-free, they've made significant changes to their approach. Priced at $50, this blanco offers a good blend of authenticity and flavor, all wrapped up in its distinctive, sexy bottle design. Asombroso's decision to embrace transparency marks a refreshing departure from their past, aligning them with the growing demand for honesty in labeling. Suavecito Tequila: Embracing Sweetness Next, we have @suavecito_tequila from NOM 1424, a brand that's clear about its use of agave nectar. This blend allows them to bottle their tequila at a unique 35% ABV for the USA market—a rarity in the industry. Their añejo, selling for about $59, is a popular choice at Total Wine. While it might be sweeter than traditional options, it fills a niche for those who appreciate a more indulgent flavor, akin to the famous 1942 style. Why This Matters For tequila enthusiasts, knowing what's in their glass is crucial—not just for flavor, but for the principles of honesty and transparency that should be a standard in the industry. By clearly stating what goes into their products, Asombroso and Suavecito are paving the way for a broader acceptance of truth in tequila production. Their openness allows consumers to appreciate tequila for what it is and decide how it fits into their personal tastes and preferences.

The Perfect Tequila Pairings for Your Next BBQ

When it comes to hosting a backyard BBQ or cookout, selecting the right drink is as important as choosing the perfect cut of meat. Among the many options, Maddie has a clear favorite: reposado tequila. Known for its smoothness and subtle barrel notes, reposado makes an excellent companion to the varied and bold flavors of barbecue food.     But with so many reposados available, how do you choose the right one for your event? Our friend Don Heiser, a chef and tequila aficionado, shared a simple yet effective tip with us: Match the Boldness Bolder Flavors Require Bolder Reposados: If you're serving a dish with intense flavors, opt for a reposado with pronounced barrel character. Smokier Flavors Require Bolder Reposados: Similarly, smoky dishes deserve a tequila that can stand up to those flavors. Tequila Pairing Recommendations Burgers & Hot Dogs: For classic BBQ staples like burgers and hot dogs, a lighter reposado with minimal barrel influence is ideal. We recommend @authenticotequila, which offers a smooth, subtle taste that enhances without overpowering. Pork Chops with Paprika: When preparing something with a bit more spice and complexity, such as pork chops seasoned with paprika, look for a medium-bodied reposado featuring rich minerality. @wildcommonspirits provides a balanced profile that complements these flavors beautifully. Smoked Brisket: For those who love the rich, smoky essence of brisket or other smoked meats, you'll want a reposado with maximum barrel character. The @espanita_tequila double-barrel reposado will amplify the smoke and richness for a perfect match. Choosing the right reposado can elevate your BBQ experience, offering tastier and more memorable pairings. Whether you prefer something light for easygoing dishes or a robust option for smoky, daring flavors, there's a reposado that fits the bill. So, what’s your go-to tequila for BBQs and cookouts? Share your favorites and let us know how you like to pair your tequilas. Cheers to flavorful gatherings and perfect pairings! 🥂🥩

The beauty of an infinity bottle is that it is never finished—it continuously evolves with every new addition. Why So Many Tequila Brands Fail

Hey Jay, what do you think about all of these bottles? Are there too many tequila brands? I mean, they say there's more than 2,000 brands and like 200 or 300 new ones every year. They're not all going to make it. It's just like the law of math, the law of business. Like a lot of these smaller brands don't have a lot of capital, right? And it costs a lot to do the marketing and the sales, not to mention buying the product. I did an analysis recently, only 39 brands, total, have even 1/4 of 1% of market share in US at retail. So, they're not all going to make it. Some will, and hopefully the great ones will, but if you've got a small brand that you'd really like, you should buy it now because who knows what's going to happen in the future.
